Harry M. Rowe World War II letters, 1939-1946.

This collection contains letters written to and from Harry Rowe and his wife, Mary, during the years 1939-1946, when they were separated during World War II. Harry Rowe served at Camp Barkley in Texas, Ashford General Hospital in West Virginia, Camp Pickett in Virginia, and in England, France, and Germany during the war. For most of the war, he was in command of Company A of the 303rd Medical Battalion of the 78th Infantry Division. He was present for the Battle of the Bulge and was presented a Bronze Star. In his letters to his wife, he reported on his work with wounded soldiers. During World War II, Mary Rowe raised the Rowe's young son, David, ran a boarding school in Burlington, Vermont, and performed with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Her activities, as well as her loving relationship with her husband, are reflected in her letters to Harry Rowe. A few photographs are also included in this collection.

Dr. Harry Morrison Rowe was born October 4, 1912, in Peacham, Vermont, son of Edward and Mary Rowe. At age nine, he suffered a life-threatening accident when he was kicked in the head by a horse but recovered with minimal lasting effects. Harry graduated from Peacham Academy in 1930, and from the University of Vermont with a bachelor's degree in 1936, and with a medical degree in 1943. He married Mary Whitney (1915-2002), of Northfield, Vermont, on August 28, 1940, and they raised six children. ...
